Abstract

Connecting uppers to insoles and soles; heels.- Boots and shoes are made with a full length steel sole e, Fig. 1, having an attachment a forming a metal stiffening for the upper, and a casing b for a resilient heel h, Fig. 2. The upper of the shoe may be attached by stitching to an outer sole just beyond the edge of the metal sole, or elongated stitch holes d could be made in the steel sole. Wire staples may be used to attach the upper, the points of the staples being pressed backwards level with the sole. Where an out-turned upper is used, a piece of pliable metal or other material is placed in the crease to keep the upper in position and to form a backing for the sewing. The heel has a spring g, Fig. 2, inserted in a loop c at the waist, and has a piston-like action in the casing b. A rubber buffer f or spring acts as a stop, and is placed eccentrically to accommodate the tread of the wearer.
