263,536. Turner Tanning Machinery Co., Ltd., and Schettler, G. A. Sept. 29, 1925. Surface areas, computing. -A stamping or marking apparatus particularly suitable for use with area-measuring machines and of the kind described in Specification 22597/11 has the following features. (1) The plungers 1, Fig. 1, are pivotally attached to levers 2 loosely mounted on a shaft 3 and depending into the sweep of the spirally arranged pins 5 on the type-chain discs 6. The levers are maintained in their inoperative position by pins 12 fixed in the shaft and engaging slots in the bosses of the levers, and the shaft is rocked to allow the levers to move into setting position by means of the bell-crank 21 controlled bv a cam on the main shaft 15. An additional lever 2<c>, Fig. 2, is connected with a pawl adapted to engage teeth on the stepped disc 10 and thus hold it fast during the feeling process. The pawl also carries an abutment to engage the back of the disc to keep it firm. To permit of slight adjustment of the type carriers for alignment purposes the levers 2 may be carried by sleeves eccentrically mounted on the shaft 3 so that the position of the abutment ends of the levers may be varied. (2) To enable the tens type to advance one or more places to provide for a measurement exceeding the capacity of the indicator, the lever 2 for the tens disc 6 is in relativelyadjustable parts. The upper part 24, Fig. 3, is pivoted at 25 on the lower or main part 2 and can be adusted relatively thereto by shifting a lever 29, so as to slide a stepped cone 28 to alter, through a contact arm 26, an angle between the parts 2, 24 and thus enable the tens type 6 to advance by one or more additional steps. (3) The ink-trough 41, Fig 8, is slidably mounted at the front of the stamping-mechanism. The inking-roller 48 is supported by a pair of arms resiliently carried by the shaft 49 rocked to draw the roller over the set types on the bands 7 by toothed sector and crank mechanism 66, 68. The inking-roller is guided by rollers on the arms running in contact with stationary cam plates 58 shaped to effect rectilinear movement of the roller across the types when these are set in position at 7<a>.
