Abstract

262,944. Towers, H., and Forster, J. Dec. 18, 1925. Firebridges.-A hollow air-heating baffle 1 supported on the masonry 3 of the firebridge of a boiler furnace comprises a dished front plate 9 of semicircular or arched form and a perforated back plate 8 mounted on a perforated bottom plate 2, a recess 11 being provided in the top of the masonry below the bottom plate communicating by an opening 6 with the space below the grate. The baffle extends close to the top of the furnace flue 4 leaving a narrow gap 5 at that part, but a wider space towards the sides of the flue. Projections 10 on the under side of the bottom plate 2 take into the recess 11 and a ledge 12 on the bottom plate supports the firebars 13. The front plate 9 is bevelled as shown. and has projections on its bottom edge taking into slots in the bottom plate. Laterally extending wings are provided on the back plate 8 abutting against the sides of the furnace flue 4 to prevent ash falling over behind the bridge. Internal vertical partitions divide the baffle into three compartments and openings 7 in the back plate 8 allow the heated air to escape to the space behind the bridge. A second baffle built of brickwork can be arranged a short distance behind the bridge to divide the hot gases.
