262,184. Cross, W., (Burson Knitting Co.). Sept. 4, 1925. Stockings.- In stock ings constructed of plain 3 and tuck stitches 9, certain of the tuck stitches are ravelled . or laddered to produce openwork which process is carried out to form a stocking having a foot portion with solid bottom and toe and a leg portion in which the openwork stripes extend downwardly, as shown, over the front of the foot portion and terminate at the rear portion 14 of the stocking at progressively increasing distances above the foot. The laddering is produced by stretching the fabric, such as, for example, an operator running his hand up the inside of the leg after the stocking is knitted. To limit the run of the ladders 11, certain of the stitches, as at 15, are anchored by sewing or other means.
