Platen presses. - An automatic hydraulicallyoperated press with a movable pressure chamber, suitable for the extraction of oil from fruit and seeds, has filtering fabric arranged in front of a bed for the chamber and means for moving the fabric with the formed cake across and away from the bed. The wall of the press chamber is formed of two parts E, F, bolted together and movable on side bars D to and from the bed C which carries a perforated plate Q over which filter fabric is drawn by means of drums S, S<1>. The material under treatment is fed to the chamber through piping O, for example from a heater P, and, under pressure from the piston I, liquid is separated and passes through a perforated liner E<1> to a groove M in the part E and a nozzle N discharging into a trough A<1> and through the perforated plate Q to vertical channels R and a trough A<2>. On release of the pressure behind the piston I the piston is withdrawn by means of a constant pressure cylinder J connected to the piston by rods K. On release of pressure in pistons G, pistons H under constant pressure move the parts E, F away from the bed C. A stop J<1> carried by these parts releases by means of levers 1', H', a band brake operating on planet gear U, U<1> which serves both as a clutch and speed reducer in driving the drum S. The filter fabric is thus drawn over the plate Q and lifts the filter cake into a funnel D. A spring-controlled flap F<1>, which slopes laterally, closes after the passage of the cake,. and the cake then rolls to the side and from the apparatus. The filter cloth is drawn back to the operating position by a counterweight V, which rotates the drum S', the parts E, F are brought into engagement with the bed C by the pistons G, and the operative cycle can be repeated. A brush H<2> is provided for cleaning the filter cloth. The valves for controlling the hydraulic pressures are operated by a cam device Z. In the form of apparatus shown in Fig. 3 a perforated plate M' is fixed to the end of the piston I. A second filter cloth L<1> attached at one end to the top of this plate covers it during the pressure operation. The cloth rises with the cake but returns by its own weight when the cake is detached from it. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also apparatus in which the press takes a double form, similar working parts being disposed at either end of a cylinder B in which two pistons I move in opposite directions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
