Abstract

500,911. Presses for separating liquids from solids. BAUSMAN, A. L. Feb. 4, 1938, No. 3532. Convention date, March 5, 1937. [Class 46] A series of combined pressure-plates 57 Fig. 6, and plungers 58, are loosely connected together and to a fixed head 21 arid a follower 33, forming part of a ram 28, by lost motion linkwork 43, 44. Press chambers are completed by rings 59, loosely connected together by similar linkwork 41, 42. Blocks forming the linkwork slide on rails 39, Fig. 3, attached to longitudinal tie rods 22. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 6, material under treatment, for example cocoa liquor, is supplied through a passage 150 in the head 21 under control of a valve 151 and is distributed into the press chambers through central apertures 152 in the parts 57, 58. Filter screens or pads are secured to the outer surfaces of these parts and the parts themselves are perforated. Under the supply pressure part of the liquid in the material under treatment passes through the screens and perforations is collected in circular grooves on the inner surfaces of the parts 58 and is discharged therefrom to a receiving pan below, through radial grooves which intersect the lower portions of the circular grooves. When the chambers are filled with semi-solid material the valve 151 is closed and pressure applied to the ram 28 so that the plungers 58 are forced into the rings 59 and the cakes compressed to extract further liquid. When the ram 28 is retracted, the pressure-elements are separated by the linkwork 43,. 44. Then by means of hydraulically-operated rack and spur gearing, supported in and on the follower 33, the end link 42 is drawn to the left and the rings 59 are moved to the left over the plungers 58, so that the cakes fall freely from the chambers. Subseqnently the rings 59 are moved to the right by rack and spur gearing supported in and on the head 21 and the ram 28 is moved to the right to bring the parts 57, 58 to their original position, so that the press is again ready for charging. In the charging position the rings 59 are spaced from the plates 57 by two series of fingers 97, 97', Fig. 3, mounted on bars 98, 98<1>, which are turned hydraulically to bring the fingers in and out of their operative position. Valves for controlling the supply and exhaustion of the pressure medium to the ram 28, and the hydraulic operating apparatus are all arranged together on the side of the ram cylinder.
