Abstract
261,696. Eclipse Machine Co. Nov. 21. 1925, [Convention date]. Driving arrangements.-An engine starter comprises a driving member 14 adapted to engage and crank an engine member 15, an inertia device such as a flywheel 60 adapted to drive the member 14, manual driving means operatively connected with the inertia device, and a dynamo 150 which can be used as a motor to drive the inertia device or can be driven, with the inertia device, as a generator for wireless transmission or other purposes, by the manual driving means. In one form, Fig. 1, the flywheel 60 is set in rotation before the members 14, 15 are brought into engagement, and a shell 159 in threaded engagement with the shaft 158 of the dynamo comes automatically into engagement with the web 61 of the flywheel when the dynamo is driven as a motor. The transmission between the flywheel and the member 14 includes bevel gears 63<a>, 45, spur gearing 41, 41, 39, and planet pinions 31 meshing with the pinion 39 and with a stationary internal gear 29. Carrier plates 32, 33 for the planet pinions are splined to a barrel 4 rotatable in a bush 3 and connected by a multiplate clutch 6 to a shell 5. Internal threads 12 in the shell 5 engage a screw shaft 13 to which the driving member 14 is connected by splines, a spring 22 normally holding the member 14 against the head of a manual operating-rod 23 extending centrally through the gearing. The manual means for driving the member 14 or the dynamo comprises a shaft 52 engaged bv a starting handle and connected by bevel gears 57, 49 to a shaft 24 having pins 88 in engagement with the hub of the planet carrier 33. Rotation of the starting handle is thus transmitted to the flywheel 60 through the planetary gearing 31, 33 and the gearing 41, 43, 45, 63<a>. To drive the dynamo 150 as a generator, a shell 163 sliding on splines 169 on the dynamo shaft has pins 167 for engagement with holes in the web 61 of the flywheel and is moved into engagement by means of a rod 166 and yoke 165. A spring-pressed locking-rod 170 holds the rod 166 and shell 163 in the engaged or disengaged position. In a modification, the hand-controlled shell. 163 is omitted and the dynamo connections are reversed when it is to be driven as a generator; the shaft 52 is engaged and driven backwards by a starting handle having a longitudinal slot for engagement with the pin 53. The flywheel 60 is thus driven backwards and the shell 159 has sufficient frictional contact with the flywheel to clamp it and establish driving connection with the dynamo. In another form, in which a shell such as 163 is employed, the can be disconnected from its shaft, spring-controlled plungers in the hub of the flywheel being held or released by the tapering end of a manually controlled rod sliding axially in the shaft.
