Abstract

Buffers; draw-gear. - A shock-absorbing device applicable to buffers and draw-gear comprises a main bow spring of true or substantially true circular arc form not exceeding a semicircle and having both ends in permanent pivotal or hinged connection with definite points in the parts connected, the main load or shock, whilst effective being applied directly, or through rigid levers, to one or both ends of the spring in an outward direction substantially in a line along the chord of the spring. A series of such springs, hinged together at their ends, may be used. The resist. ance of the spring increases with the load, its load deflection curve being substantially a rectangular hyperbola. In the railway vehicle buffer shown. the springs a, which are arranged in slots in the body o, are inturned at their ends to form a hinged engagement with the body o and the telescoping buffer n.
