Abstract

259,322. Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., J. I., and Barford, V. G. July 14, 1925. Springs, arrangement of; equalizing load on wheels.-Relates to six-wheeled motor vehicles having a bogie comprising twin driving- axles connected together by longitudinal springs pivoted to the vehicle frame, and consists in an arrangement of the springs, and in some cases of additional radius rods so that the torque of the axle casings is taken by the frame while the torque of the bogie as a whole is resisted without affecting the even distribution of weight on the driving wheels. As shown in Fig. 1, a pair 1, 2 of springs is provided at each side of the vehicle, the springs being independently pivoted at 6, 7 to a bracket 3 on the vehicle frame. The brackets on opposite sides of the vehicle are connected by a tubular member 5. The ends of the springs are mounted on transverse pivots 11 in frames 9 pivoted to the axle casings on longitudinal pivots 10, the springs having side play on the pilots 11, to permit relative angular movement of the axles in transverse planes without lateral stressing of the springs. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a single spring is used at each side of the vehicle in conjunction with pairs of parallel radius rods 13, 14 pivoted to the frames 9 and to the bracket 3.
