Abstract

501,580. Railway - vehicle bogies. OSTER, L. E. W. MONTROSE-. May 28, 1937, No. 14922. [Class 103 (vi)] In a four-wheel bogie for railway or like high-speed vehicles, in order to avoid sinusoidal running and to decrease the imspring weight, light independently supported wheels are provided, while, in order to reduce jolts transmitted to the body, the bogie structure is built up of seriesconnected systems of equalizing levers as traced from each wheel to the centre pin, the members of some of such systems comprising elements arranged in parallel. In the construction shown, each of the four wheels 3, Fig. 6, has a hollow hub 2 to receive a stub axle 5 formed on a carrier 5<1>, which is suspended from the side frame members 11 by means of three parallel ball-jointed links 9, Fig. 3, the lower two of which are preferably sprung by helical springs 13 bearing against brackets 14. Each wheel-carrier is further guided by a longitudinal pivoted link 10, Fig. 2. The two side-frames comprise longitudinals 11, 16 arranged in parallel and pivot as equalizing levers about a transverse tubular member 17, on the outer ends of which also oscillate brackets 19 forming bearings for two transverse leaf-springs 22. Universally mounted with respect to the shaft 17 by means of a U-shaped rubber cushion and also supported by the springs 22 is a casting 23 fitted with bearings 24, 25 for the bogie-pin socket 26. Thus, owing to the longitudinal and transverse lever systems formed by the side frames and springs 22, any jolt communicated from one wheel to the side frame is transmitted in a reduced ratio to the centre-pin, while the springs .13, where such are provided, may absorb small shocks without transmitting any part thereof. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), the bogie is motor driven, and the helical springs associated with the links 9 are inclined to the vertical.
