Description

SEAT APPARATUS FOR AN AIRCRAFT OR SIMILAR
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to seat apparatus for an aircraft or similar, in particular for providing seated exercise, more particularly but not exclusively to reduce dangers of deep vein thrombosis.
Background
Increasing numbers of passengers on long distance travel vehicles such as airplanes and trains and multi-user motor vehicles such as coaches is a factor in many societies across the world.
Such users may be envisaged to be required to stay seated in vehicle seating for a long period of time during a journey, which in turn may last an even longer time.
Prolonged seating, compounded by bodies of users accustomed to sedentary lifestyles and/or having poor circulation, can unfortunately lead to health problems, for example 20 with circulation issues.
Deep vein thrombosis is known to be prevalent and dangerous in such circumstances, and can be liable to lead to severe health and wellbeing problems for the user.
Prior Art
GB 2 404 346 (HENDRY) discloses a foot rest arrangement or exercise device is provided which is suitable for use in front of a seated user. The foot rest arrangement includes at least one plate, so that a user is able to contact the or each plate with either or both of his feet. The plate, which may be spring biassed, is arranged so as to be operatively displaceable by movement of a foot resting thereupon, such as to enable a user to flex the ankle joint of the foot being used, to raise and lower the foot and thus enhance venous blood return flow of the associated leg. The device may be mounted to a foot rest of an aircraft seat. Two further exercise devices are disclosed which are adapted to rest on the floor.
EP 1 304 144 (WINKLER) discloses a seat exercise device for use onboard a mobile platform such as a commercial aircraft is disclosed, wherein a passenger engages the exercise device while seated to reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during extended periods of travel. The preferred embodiment of the present invention 5 comprises a leg support secured to a passenger seat and a foot support secured to a lower end of the leg support. .A trombone spring is secured between the leg support and the foot support such that a passenger may push down on the foot support to flex and contract thigh muscles. Additionally, a pivot spring is secured between the leg support and the foot support such that a passenger may pivot the foot support to flex 10 and contract calf muscles. Accordingly, the flexing and contracting of leg muscles increases blood circulation and reduces the risk of DVT during long flights.
GB 2 377 651 (STOREY) discloses an exercise device for feet and legs comprises a frame which may replace the foot rest under a seat in a vehicle. The frame pivots at a 15 point under the seat to allow the foot rest to be pressed down, resistance being provided by springs or hydraulic devices, which return the foot rest to its rest position. The foot rest may also pivot on the frame, allowing the user to rotate the ankle. The exercise is intended to stimulate blood flow in the lower limbs while seated: in particular the device may be used to reduce the likelihood of Deep Vein Thrombosis on aircraft. 20 The present invention arose in order to overcome problems suffered by existing devices.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a seat apparatus for an aircraft or similar, comprising one or more seats wherein the seat or seats comprise a foot-rest device arranged in front of the seat, which foot rest device comprises one or more foot rests, and one or more foot rest supports, each support comprising a basal portion and a foot rest supporting portion, wherein at least some of the foot rest is arranged to displace with reference to the basal portion and the foot rest supporting portion is arranged to connect with the basal portion resiliently.
In some embodiments the device is arranged to displace with reference the seat. For 35 example the device may be capable of being stowed, and/or removed, with reference the seat.
In embodiments where the device is capable of movement reference the seat the seat movement may be enabled by a movement means. Said movement means may comprise a partial or whole displacement of the device from the seat, and may be separate to an internal displacement mechanism for portions of the device with reference to each other.
In some embodiments parts of the device are arranged to displace with reference one another in addition or the alternative.
In this way the foot rest may displace resiliently on the support portion, such that a user may move their feet against a resilient portion.
In this way the apparatus or more particularly the device may be enabled to provide 15 exercise or resistance to the user, or more particularly the user's lower body in use, so as to limit problems with prolonged seating, in particular circulation problems.
Such resilience may comprise a spring, or spring bias Such spring may be located between the basal portion and the foot rest.
Some embodiments may comprise more than one resilient portion.
In some embodiments the device foot rest may comprise a textured surface. In some embodiments therefore the foot rest may provide textured feedback against the user's feet. In this way the foot rest and device generally may be arranged to provide massage to the user's feet, so as to limit problems with prolonged seating, in particular circulation problems.
Furthermore it may be envisaged that the surface may provide benefits regarding reflexology or acupressure. For example the pedal contact surface may be arranged or arrangeable to provide specific benefits with reference to specific points on the user's body such as the area under the big toe anatomically correlating to the neck region or the inner aspect of the sole of the foot correlating to the thoracic and lumbar spine regions which may become stiff with journeys of longer duration and for which acupressure and reflexology may help to relieve tension for the user.
In some embodiments the device may comprise separate or separable foot rests, which may comprise separate or separable support portions, and may comprise a singular basal portion for securement to the seat in use.
In such embodiments it may be envisaged that the foot rests may be arranged to move in relation to another. For example in some embodiments it may be envisaged that displacement of a first foot rest may drive displacement of a second foot rest, and vice versa. In this way it may be envisaged that the user may be encouraged to cycle foot movements in use, consequently so as to limit problems with prolonged seating, in particular circulation problems.
In some embodiments as common in the art the foot rests may be arranged to lock in a ratchet position or position, so as to provide a secure and stable foot rest or foot rests.
Release of such a ratchet position or positions may enable a spring bias to operate and return the foot rest or foot rests to a substantially vertical or stowed position.
In such embodiments it may be envisaged that resistance to the user is encountered 20 past the ratchet position or positions.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the Figures in which:
Brief Description of Figures
Figure 1 shows an isometric view from above of an embodiment of a device for an embodiment of apparatus according to the present invention; Figure 2 shows an isometric view from below of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows an exploded isometric view from above of the device as shown in Figure 1; and Figure 4 shows a reverse isometric view of the embodiment of the device shown in Figure 3.
Detailed Description of Figures
With reference to the figures there is shown an embodiment of a device for seat apparatus for an aircraft or similar, the apparatus comprising one or more seats, the embodiment of the device 99 generally comprising a foot-rest device arranged in front of the seat, comprises one or more foot rests 2, and one or more foot rest supports, each support comprising a basal portion 3 and a foot rest supporting portion 4, wherein at least some of the foot rest 2 is arranged to displace with reference to the basal portion and the foot rest supporting portion 4 is arranged to connect with the basal portion 3 resiliently.
In the pictured embodiment the basal portion 3 is shared by the two foot rests 2, comprising a cylindrical outer and central spindle 1, wherein the foot rest supporting portions 4 comprise members extending orthogonal the axis of the spindle 1.
The foot rest supporting portions 4 have a pivot 9 at a distal end, whereby the proximal end is connected to the spindle 1.
The basal portion 3 comprises a cylindrical outer 6 welded to two tabs 7, which tabs provided through-passage for bolts and enable threaded securement through perforations on a support bar 5. The support bar 5 may be envisaged to comprise the seat or part thereof, or may be envisaged to be connected to the seat in use, according to embodiment to the apparatus.
The foot rest supporting portions 4 are bolted onto the spindle 1 and pivots 9.
The foot rests 2 comprise rectangular paddles or an oval sectional profile, pivoting at a midway point along the oval sides.
The foot rests comprise silicone or rubber or thermoplastic covers, which are provided 35 on a first face 8, envisaged to be the top face, with a raised and lowered profile, which profile is formed in the pictured embodiment by raised pimples. These pimples may be envisaged to provide a massage function to the user's soles during usage.
In some embodiments the pimples may be resiliently deformable material, so as to 5 promote greater comfort and interaction.
In the pictured embodiment the foot rest may be envisaged to be a single moulded polypropylene part.
As shown in the exploded views in Figures 3 and 4 inside the cylindrical outer 6 of the basal portion 3 the spindle 1 is discontinuous and comprises two ratchet wheels 42 and two torsion springs 42.
