Pistons; cooling.-In a piston-cooling, telescopicpipe system, injury from misalignment or irregularity of movement is avoided by mounting the stationary portion of the system on a flexible or universal joint. The cooling chambers of inner and outer pistons of a double-acting internal - combustion engine are cooled by liquid which passes through the piston-rods and returns by a central pipe. An obstruction in the supply passage causes the cooling-water to circulate around the lower piston. The supply and return passages extend to the crosshead and are connected by passages 13, 14 in a bracket 15 carried thereon to supply and discharge pipes 16, 17 respectively secured to the bracket. The pipes telescope through stuffing- boxes 20 carried by stationary pipes 18, 19 supported by universal joints on the cylinder frame B. The cooling-fluid is supplied through a head 21 on the pipe 18 to an interior pipe 23 provided with a head 3 sliding in the pipe 16. Leakage escapes by a pipe 24. An outlet is provided on the pipe 19. Leakage of cooling-liquid and lubricating-oil is removed by laterally-movable scrapers 29 on the rods 16, 17 and collected in a trough 4. The supply and exhaust passages may be reversed.
