Capsules and the like, applying. - The parent Specification relates to machines for applying caps &c. to bottles, jars, &c. of the type in which the cap &c. is clamped against the neck of the bottle, jar, &c. by an endless ring which is displaced inwardly, and comprises a machine of this type having a base on which the bottle &c. stands, a bracket having an opening into which the neck of the bottle &c. can project, and a number of slides which are radially movable within the bracket to distort the ring, the bracket and base being movable relative to each other. According to the invention, the cap &c. is temporarily retained in position by a securing ring 31 which is passed over the mouth of the vessel prior to fixing. In a modification, Fig. 6, the securing ring 31 is replaced by a spring-pressed plunger 40 which is slidably mounted within the clamping-ring reservoir 25. An adjustable stop 51 is fitted to the machine so that the relative movements of the bracket and base can be limited to suit the various sizes of bottle &c. to be capped. The clamping-rings 22 may be of hollow material telescopically arranged or of endless form having radial projections when contracted by the slides.
