Abstract

Diaphragms. - In a horn in which a vibrating diaphragm produces interruptions in a fluid stream, the diaphragm is secured at its periphery to resilient radial arms which are mounted at their opposite ends upon the instrument at points between the periphery and the centre of the system. In one construction, Figs. 1 and 2, the diaphragm d with its circumferential ring e is formed integral with resilient arms f which are secured at their inner ends to a carrier g. In a modification, the arms fare attached to the outer side of the rim e and are bent underneath. In another construction Fig. 4, the tongues f are cut from a circular plate in the manner shown. In a further arrangement, the circular centre of the diaphragm is connected by three arms to a triangular ring which carries the resilient mounting arms. The diaphragm may be of steel, pinchbech, bone, celluloid, wire gauze, &c. A second diaphragm bearing wholly or partially against the first may be provided to prevent undesirable oscillations, and the main diaphragm may also be tensioned by the use of additional bearing elements such as pins.
