Abstract
257,021. Burch, C. R., Davis, N. R., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. May 20, 1925. Induction furnaces. -Materials of low electrical conductivity are heated in a crucible of f conducting material of a high order of resistivity, for example 0.1 ohm per cubic centimetre, by subjecting the crucible to any alternating field of such frequency that the expression 2f #D #is greater than 1, so that the r Î 10<9> induced eddy currents are substantially confined to the crucible. D is the external diameter of the crucible in centimetres, f is the frequency and r is the resistivity of the material of the crucible in ohms per centimetre cube. The crucible 1 is supported on a heat resisting and preferably electrically insulating block 2 and is surrounded by lagging 5 enclosed in a silica tube 3. The turns of the water-cooled inductance coil 6 are separated by ebonite washers 7. The whole furnace is enclosed in a box 8 mounted on trunnions.
