Abstract
256,179. Matthews Corporation, W. N., (Assignees of Birkenmaier, T.). Aug. 1, 1925, [Convention date]. Air-pressure sprayers. - An atomizer for spraying paints, lacquers &c. comprises a body 33, Fig. 2, provided with a longitudinal liquid passage 39 and a compressed-air passage 41, air being led thereto through a passage 55 in the handle 59. A cross passage 43 has threaded in it a connection 45 to maintain communication between the forward and rearward parts of the passage 41. Into the passage 39 is screwed a nipple 89 with a seating for the conical end 93 of a spring-actuated valve which has an extension 95 for cleaning the nozzle. The valve stem extends rearwardly through a stuffing-box 101 and carries at its outward end adjusting nuts which are acted on by projections in triggers 79, pivoted on a bracket 35 on the sprayer body. The air valve 69 is actuated by a saddle piece 83 connected to the trigger by hinged arms 77 engaging nuts 73 on the end of a stem 63, the saddle piece being notched at 85 so that if required it may be lifted out of engagement with the nut 73. The nuts 73, 107 are so adjusted that the air valve is opened before the paint valve. The body 33 is threaded to receive a ring 115 which holds adjustably a rotatable jacket 119. The jacket carries a liner 127 shaped to form an air passage round the forward part of the nipple 89. Two passages 123 spaced diametrically are formed in the jacket 119 and converge at their forward end where they enter a depression 125. Air passes along the passage 41 and through a hole 131 into the space between the nipple and liner and aspirates and atomizes the liquid at the nozzle. Air also is led through passages 135 to holes 133, arranged at intervals of 90‹. The jacket 119 may be adjusted so that the passages 123 register with either pair of holes 133 in which case the spray is flattened to form a fan-shaped spray. The paint container 3 consists of an inverted can with a dished lid 11 held in position by a nut 17 engaging a stay bolt 9, the nut lying entirely with the depression 15. A curved liquid-supply pipe 23 leads to a nipple 45 with which the union nut 5 engages. A pipe 27, closed by a vented cap 29, Fig. 1, extends to the bottom of the reservoir and some distance above it to form an expansion chamber to receive any liquid which may be forced up by a rise of temperature. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes a separate expansion chamber 31, Fig. 13 (Cancelled); it may be of the form shown in dotted lines. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
