Energy-absorbing elements.-In brakes or apparatus for the hydraulic transmission of power, of the kind in which an annular liquid chamber is provided between inner and outer members the inner member being provided with cam-operated vanes and the outer with controlling valves, the valves 6, Figs. 1 and 2, are disposed in blocks a held in recesses in a ring C disposed between en( plates A, B. Each valve consists of a slottec cylinder closed at one end and engaged by a spindle 10, and a spring 8 presses a conical par of the spindle against a seat 9. The spindles are geared to quadrants 29<a> on a sleeve 29, providec with slots 30, 30<a>, Fig. 3, engaged by pins which may be moved by connections with a lever 36 Filling and relief valves 26, 27 are provided and leakage may be returned through a hollow shaft For use as a brake either the outer or the inner member is stationary.
