Mercury switches, with clockwork or electric motor actuation, comprise a duplicate pendulum A, E connected by insulation F, the main arm A being rockable on a shaft C by means of a clockwork- or electricallyactuated pendulum D. The double mercury switch H, J comprises a central insulating part G of cylindrical form with a recess at each end closed by the insulating plugs H<1>, J<1>, the recesses containing mercury and contact points H<2>, J<2> connected by a bow K and contact points H<3>, J<3> which attach the sliding frame L to the part G. The frame L embraces the arm A and is fixed by a spring L<1> engaging any one of a number of closely arranged notches (not shown) on the arm A. When the pendulum rocks to either side the contacts in the recess on that side are electrically -connected, whereas for a short space of time in the middle position no contact is made. The circuit is by way of the connection M, arm E, bow K, either pair of contacts, frame L, and arm A. The period between the interrupting of the circuit can be varied by sliding the frame L up and down the arms, and the arm A may be graduated for this purpose.
