Abstract

A sailing boat has a mast 2 mounted amidships with a transverse crossbeam 3 or yard mounted substantially at the top of the mast and extending outward towards the sides of the hull(s) 1. Port and starboard side sails or jibs 8 may be located about forestays 6 and 7 that are attached to the crossbeam ends 4 and 5 and extend forward to the sides of the boat. A main or headsail 9 may be located to the centre or middle of the crossyard and may extend forward substantially to the bow 11 of the ship via a forestay or mainstay 10. All the sails may be loose footed or may use a pole beam to support them. The arrangement is intended increase sail area, to eliminate the need to store alterative sails on board the ship and to provide unrestricted access when tacking. The rig may be used on single or multihull boats Fig 2.

TRIPLE RIG
Description.
This rig arrangement has three sails and is suitable for single and multihull sailing boats and is designed to increase sail area and eliminate the need to store alternative sails on board.
To improve on wind power, the sail area has been increased by replacing the conventional main sail with two side sails, one port side and one on the starboard side, both rigged beyond the path of the head sail which has unrestricted access.
Both side sails are rigged as jibs and add extra lift and sail area to the overall arrangement.
The forestays that support the side sails are connected to the extreme ends of a crossbeam. The cross beam is attached to the top of the mast and extends across the boat to the port and starboard sides.
All three sails are loose footed and can be fitted with a simple boom pole which has unrestricted space when required to tack. Other standard fittings can be fitted to this sail arrangement.
This invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which :
In drawing 1 the triple rig is attached to the deck(l) of a single hull boat where the mast(2) is suitably positioned amidships and supports a crossbeam{3), the said crossbeam extends to the outer port(4) side and starboard(5) side of the deck and forms the attachment points for the port(6) and starboard(7) forestays from which the side sails(8) are attached.
The head sail(9) is attached to the forestay(lO) which connects the mast top to the bow(ll).
In drawing 2 the triple rig is attached to the deck of a multihull boat(l) where the mast(2) is suitably positioned amidships and supports a cross beam(3), the said crossbeam extends to the outer port(4) side and starboard(5) side of the boat and forms the attachment point for the port(6) and starboard(7) forestays from which the side saiis(8) are attached.
The head sail(9) is attached to the forestay(lO) which connects the mast top to the bow(ll).

Claims (3)

Claims
1. A Triple rig arrangement for single and multihull sailing boats comprising:
a mast positioned amidships, supporting a cross beam, where the extreme ends of the crossbeam extend to the port and starboard sides of the boat and become the attachment points for the side sail forestays.
2. A rig arrangement according to claim 1 comprising:
both port and starboard side sails attached to the port and starboard forestays
3. A rig arrangement according to claim 1 or 2 in combination with a head sail having a luff rigged from the main forestay and the clew of the sail attached to the end of a boom pole whereby the said boom pole stops short of the mast.
Abstract
A Triple rig arrangement for single and multihuil sailing boats comprising three jibs, two of which are side sails(8), one sail on the port side and one on the starboard side of the deck.
The third jib(9) is the headsail, rigged from the bow forestay(lO) and has unrestricted space to swing in front of the mast and the side sails.
The forestays(6 & 7) for the side sails are attached to the extreme ends of the cross beam(4 & 5) which is supported by the mast and extends to the outer sides of the boat.
