Benzanthrone sulphinic acids are obtained by treating Bz1-halogenebenzanthrones or their substitution products with hydrosulphites or with aldehyde sulphoxylates, preferably in neutral or alkaline solution and in presence of a solvent such as an aqueous alcohol. They are converted into sulphonic acids by oxidation and into mercaptans or sulphides by action of sodium sulphide solution at ordinary temperature and 70- 80‹ C. respectively; at still higher temperatures the action of sodium sulphide yields also isodibenzanthrones. Isodibenzanthrones are also obtained by fusing with alkali alcoholates the sulphinic acids or their alkyl or acyl derivatives obtainable by alkylating or acylating them. By heating with inert diluents the sulphinic acids yields Bz1- Bz1<1>-benzanthronyl sulphides and by heating with sulphuric acid or by action of metals such as copper or aluminium and concentrated sulphuric acid in the cold yield Bz1-Bz1<1>-benzanthronyl disulphides. According to examples Bz1-benzanthrone sulphinic acid is obtained from Bz1-chlor- or brom-benzanthrone and sodium hydrosulphite or sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate; it yields benzanthrone sulphonic acid on oxidation in aqueous solution.
