Abstract

255,143. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Koppers Co.). April 14, 1925. Purifier waste, revivefying.-Gases are purified from hydrogen sulphide, hydrogen cyanide, &c. by passing them through a liquid containing in suspension a solid reactive to hydrogen sulphide, separating from the spent liquid the sulphided solid as a sludge, revivefying the sludge by oxidation without ' oxidation of the sulphur formed, and returning the revivefied sludge to the separated liquid. The liquid comprises preferably a 3 per cent solution of sodium carbonate containing a 1 per cent suspension of iron oxide. The apparatus comprises a scrubber A from which the spent liquid passes through a pipe 5 to a continuous separator B. The separated sludge neutralized by liquid from the tank 20 is pumped through a pipe 6 to a tank C where it is revivefied by aeration by air jets 10. Sulphur may be separated with the aid of flotation agents, e.g., kerosene, as a foam which over flows into a trough 23 or may be accumulated as a sludge in the tank C. The revivefied suspension is remixed with the separated solution in a tank E and then pumped to the scrubber A through a heater 31 by which the temperature of the suspension is raised to 85‹ C. Specifications 209,169, 238,172, 255,139, 255,140, 255,141, and 255,142 are referred to.
