Abstract

255,139. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Koppers Co.). April 14, 1925. Liquids, treating with gases; purifier waste, revivefying.-Liquids are aerated by passing gas into the liquid through a vibrating or pliable layer of porous material such as cotton, canvas, linen &c., supported with freedom of movement so that precipitated solids are detached therefrom . The gases are passed into the liquid through a perforated pipe or injector 52 which may be curved, the perforations being covered by a porous tubular envelope 51 supported by end pieces 54 and clamps 53, and reinforced by transverse and longitudinal ribs. The pipe 51 is supported on a pivotal joint 65 and is prevented from rising out of the liquid by contact of its end part 64 with the side of the tank containing the liquid. A number of the injectors are used in combination in one tank. The combination of an aeration tank of this type with a gas absorption apparatus is described with reference to processes for purifying foul gases from hydrogen sulphide as described in Specification 255,140. The sulphur set free in the above processes may be separated by flotation with the aid of a small amount of kerosene; or, alternatively, may be allowed to accumulate at the bottom of the aeration tank as a sludge. Specifications 238,172, 241,248, and 255,142 also are referred to.
