Abstract

255,140. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Koppers Co.). April 14, 1925. Scrubbers and washers; materials and compositions for purifying.-In a cyclic, process for the elimination of hydrogen sulphide and other impurities from fuel gases free from ammonia by washing the gases with an alkaline liquid containing an iron compound in suspension, and regenerating the spent solution by aeration through a minutely porous partition, the temperature of the liquid is maintained about 85‹ F. The iron compound is introduced in as fine a state as possible, e.g. to pass through a 200 mesh sieve, and consists of a natural iron oxide such as bog iron ore, or the artificial iron oxide resulting as a by-product in anniline manufacture. The impure gases introduced through a pipe 2 pass through bubbling-hoods 4 into the alkaline liquid and also pass round a baffle through hurdles 7 moistened by a supply of the revivefied liquid warmed by a heater 30 and sprayed from nozzles 10; the level of the solution is adjusted by an eccentrically apertured disc 11. The fouled solution is passed by pipes 12 - - 15 through a separator 16 having a bye-pass 17 and seal 20 to an aerator 31 where the liquid is revivefied with air passed through pliable porous tubular members 33 as described in Specification 255,139. Return of the fouled liquid to the tower is prevented by a blank 18. The sulphur, owing to the heating of the liquid, does not collect as a foam, and forms a sludge which accumulates in a depressed part 36 of the aerator provided with an air pipe 37 for keeping the sulphur in suspension when it is not being removed. Specifications 238,172, 241,248, 255,141, and 255,142 are referred to.
