Abstract

254,566. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). Sept. 30, 1925. Extrusion machines.-Electric cables are made by depositing in the form of a tube upon the conductor an insulating covering of pulp mixed with heavy oil, coating it with quick drying adhesive material, and enclosing it in a metallic sheath. The pulp is preferably paper pulp consisting of a soft mixture of pure dehydrated sulphite pulp and the oil is preferably petrolatum. The covering is extruded on the wire by a tubing machine 1 and as it emerges the covering is sprayed with a cohesive such as ether shellac or alcohol shellac from nozzles 7 and dried by a cold air blast from nozzles 8 whence the cable passes to a lead press to have a lead sheath applied in the usual manner. The machine has a container for the pulp mixture, which is under pressure, and has a removable plug 4 opposite the nozzle 2 the wire being drawn through a hole in the plug coaxial with the nozzle.
