Abstract

252,216. Rose, W., and Rose Bros. (Gainsborough), Ltd. Jan. 19, 1925. Packeting by wrapping-up.-Relates to apparatus for wrapping cartons, blocks. or other articles, and in which the articles are advanced bv a conveyer past folding devices which form a partial covering, the open end of which faces rearwardly. In order to remove the partially wrapped article from the conveyer, to prevent fouling therewith and for further folding operations, the article, when arriving towards the end of the travel of the conveyer, is moved ahead at a speed greater than that of the conveyer, and, according to the invention. this is effected by transfer members on opposite sides of the conveyer and operable first to engage and tuck in the projecting side portions of the wrapper, and then by engagement with the rear face of the article, push it clear of the conveyer. As shown, the articles 17 are fed from the base of a hopper 3, Figs. 1 and 2, by members 16 on continuously moving endless chains 10, 10. A wrapper 6 is disposed across the path of the article, being positioned bv members 7 - - 9, and is carried to the right by the article. The bottom portion of the wrapper is folded up by the base-plate 21 and the top by the member 8. side folders 22, 22a making the first tucks so that the wrapper is in the condition shown in Fig. 6. Folders 23, 23, 24, 24a apply the side folds to form an open-ended packet as shown in Fig. 12, adhesive having been applied to the first folds by wheels 26. 26 projecting through slots in the folders. Members 25, 25 retain the folds to secure adhesion during further travel and the parts x, Fig. 12. are then engaged by folders 64, 64. Figs. 2 and 15. to turn them down into the position shown in Fig. 14. The folders are operated bv a cam 30 and crank-disc 31 through links 47 - 54 to move in paths W, W shown in plan in Fig. 15 at, a rate of travel greater than that of the members 16 on the chains, so that the packet is disengaged from the member. A resilient action of the folders is ensured by springs 61. 61. The folders 64 are slotted or forked to enable them to pass within guide bars 63, 63 during their movement. All the folding and operating members on one side of the machine are adjustable to enable packages of different sizes to be dealt with. Slotted standards 106 - - 111 co-operate with bolts 112 - - 117 for adjustment of the preliminary folding mechanism,. and the other mechanism is mounted on bosses 38, 39 adjustable on a shaft 33 by means of screws 118, 119. After the operation of the folders 64, the packet, now in the condition shown in Fig. 14, arrives on a base-plate 68, Fig. 1, at the foot of a stacking device 67. A blade 77 turns up the lower outstanding broad fold and the plate 18 rises, the other fold being turned down by a side of the device 67. In a modified form of apparatus, the folders 64 are replaced by folders 104, Fig. 16, having a paddle-shaped extension adapted to pass inwards through slots 105 in retaining members 97, 98 at the beginning of its working stroke, and outwards at the end thereof through similar slots.
