Abstract

Aeroplanes; helicopters; propelling; steering; planes, construction of.-A machine, adapted to fly vertically or horizontally, has a tractor propeller adapted to be swung from a horizontal to a vertical position, supporting planes provided with shutters on transverse axes which can be set in a vertical position during vertical flight, a lifting propeller at the tail. and means for retarding forward flight. The shaft 34 of the tractor 36 swings in a slot in the fuselage when moved by a quadrant 29 and worm 30. The shaft 34 is driven by bevel gear from the common transverse shaft of two laterally placed engines 24. The engine shaft is also connected by bevel gear and a clutch 40 to a longitudinal shaft 39 which drives through bevel gear a propeller 46 for supporting the tail during vertical flight. A brake 47 on the shaft of the propeller 46 becomes operative as the clutch 40 is released. The propeller shaft 34 is held at either end of the slot in the fuselage by catches operated from a lever 54. The planes 14, 15 have series of transverse shutters 17, Fig. 3, on shafts, moved by pinions 18 which engage racks 19 operated by levers 20 and controlled by a lever 21, Fig. 2. Stopping way.-To check forward motion a roller curtain 50 is pulled down by a cord 51 controlled by a hand wheel 52 to close the gap between the planes.
