UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MACHINE OF AERIAL NAVIGATION.
Application filed April 25, 1922. Serial No. 556,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAUL PATERAS PES- CARA, citizen of Argentine, and residing in Barcelona, Spain, have invented various Improvements for Machines of Aerial Navigation, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in machines for aerial navigation, and is particularly directed to a structure whereby supporting surfaces are provided, Wh1ch during horizontal flight are rigid with relation to the machine to serve as planes, and which are adapted to provide a propeller supporting system for starting, descending, or hovering in the air.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation, partly in vertical section of the improved machine.
Fig. 2 is a front view.
Fig. 3 is a plan.
The construction provides an upper and lower or superior and inferior supporting surfaces 10 and 11, having hubs 12 and 13 rotatably mounted in a fixed casing 13' and independently driven in opposite directions by a differential, including crown gears 16 and 17 on the respective hubs and a pinion 18. The supporting surfaces 10 and 11 are adapted to be locked in rigid relation to the structure to serve as fixed planes during horizontal flight through the medium of locking mechanism, including sleeves 14: cooperating with lugs not shown on the hubs 12 and 13, the sleeves proper being held in locked position by interlocking shock absorbing structure indicated at 14 and 15. This locking mechanism is more particularly described in my co-pending application, Serial No. 556541, filed April 25, 1922, it being understood however, that for the purpose of the present invention, any other type of such mechanism may be employed. The pinion 18 is operated by an engine 20 through an intermediate clutch 19 controlled from a pedal 19' convenient to the operators seat 24. A pusher propeller 22 is provided for use in horizontal flight, this propeller being driven from motor shaft 23 operated through clutch 21 and controlled from pedal 21.
A landing chassis is provided, including spaced wheels 33, 34, companion skids 36, and a frame 37 supporting the axle 35 for the wheels. A light preferably metal casing overlies the skids and to a large extent covers the wheels as indicated at 38 and 39, this casing being such as to present a good penetrating surface to the air.
The frame 29 of the machine proper as Well as the body 30, may be in any desired appropriate form or construction, the requirement being in this particular that proper accommodation be had in such frame and body for the various mechanisms.
The locking means 14 may be controlled as by lever 26, while levers 27 and joy stick 25 are provided for various other controls necessary in this type of machine.
What I claim is:
In an aeroplane, a body, a landing carriage supporting the body, a wing arranged intermediate the body and landing carriage, a wing arranged above the body, the axes of the respective wings being in alignment, operating means carried by the body for actuating said wings in opposite directions, and independent means each having its own control whereby either of the wings may be held in fixed relation to the body at will.
