Abstract

251,498. Schmeisser, H., and Schmeisser, H. Aug. 17, 1925. Breech actions, sliding breech-block.-A rifle of the kind having a tubular magazine beneath the barrel and a feed lever or lifter adapted to receive a cartridge from the magazine and to lift it into line with the barrel, has a breech-block comprising two relatively slidable parts both of which support the base of the cartridge, one part, which advances before the other, being at the front sufficiently narrow to pass through a slot in the cartridge lifter to ram the cartridge into the chamber, the other part then advancing to complete the support of the base of the cartridge and also preferably to act as a firing-pin. As shown in Figs. 3, 13 the breech-block comprises an inner part 4 and an outer part 5 both pressed forwards by springs. The cartridge lifter comprises a lever 10 formed at the front end with a recess 10<a> to receive the cartridge. The rear wall of the recess is formed with a slot, through which the front end of the inner part 4 of the breechblock passes to ram the cartridge into the chamber. The other part 5 is held by a sear 13 and at the front is formed with a firing pin 5<a>. The cartridge lifter is reciprocated by shoulders 4<a>, 4b on the part 4 engaging the rear end 10<c> of the lever. In a modification, the breech-block mechanism is mounted on a removable cover 1<a>, which is locked in place by a sliding bolt 14. A vertically sliding bolt 15 retains the breechblock in the cover when this is removed. The breech-block may be provided with a pivoted locking lever 16, Fig. 10.
