Safety - valves; fluid actuated fuel valves for water heaters.- In automatic means for controlling the heat supplied to cooking apparatus, boilers and the like in which liquid is heated by gaseous or liquid fuel and the burner controlled by a flexible diaphragm subjected to the pressure of the steam or vapour an air leak is provided which closes after the air has been driven out and under influence of the steam or vapour pressure. The water bath of the cooker a is heated by a gas-burner b the supply to which is regulated by a grooved plunger c actuated by a diaphragm f the lower side of which is subjected to the steam pressure by a tee piece e also connected to a cylinder h containing a safety valve i. The valve i rests on a seating h<1> and is hollowed to receive a ball j. When heating commences air escapes through the hollow stem i<1>, but when the generation of steam is too rapid to escape through an orifice i<4> the ball j is carried upwards against its heating i<3> and the steam pressure caused to act on the diaphragm until the safety valve i is raised from its seating. On cooling the ball drops and re-admits air, thus preventing a sub-atmospheric pressure from being established in the boiler.
