Abstract

251,371. V÷gele Akt.-Ges., J., and P÷sentrup, H. Feb. 10, 1925. Friction apparatus on permanent way,-Brakes for railway vehicles of the kind comprising pairs of braking rails or bars disposed adjacent the track and adapted to be forced against the sides of the wheels by the weight of the vehicle comprise means for raising the rails such that the vehicle is completely raised from the track. The braking rails 1, 1', Figs. 1 and 2, of each pair are respectively fixed to a support 2 and to an arm 9 pivoted to the support. The supports 2 are free, to slide transversely on transverse girders 3 carried by rocking posts 5 which are moved from the position shown in .broken lines to that shown in full lines to bring the braking rails into the braking position shown in Fig. 2 when the weight of the vehicle acting on the rails 1<1> causes them and the rails 1 to be forced against the wheels cf the vehicle. The arrangement is such that the braking force assists in raising the structure carrying the braking rails. The construction shown in Figs. 3 and 5 comprises supports 15 carrying the braking rail 23 and also pivoted arms 17 carrying the braking rails 25. The supports 15 are free to slide transversely upon and between pairs of girders 14 connected by members 27 to form a rigid structure supported by rollers 28 on supports 29 which are upwardly inclined in the direction of the travel of the vehicles whereby a force applied to the structure in this direction brings the braking rails 23, 25 into operative position. The running rails are lowered. slightly from the point a to render the brake effective. A part 18 secured to the rails 25 engages a fixed stop 19 to hold the arms 17 in the inoperative position. The structure 14. 27 is held against lateral movement by the engagement of the members 27 with posts 13 which support the track rails 12. Specification 229,664 is referred to.
