- This invention relates to a railway safety device or anti-derailing means carried by a car moving over the rails of a track, which will hold the car against being derailed when a car is moving particularly at high speed.
- An important object of the invention is to provide arms constructed preferably of steel, the arms being attached to the running gear of the trucks of a railway car, the arms providing supports for guard wheels that operate in horizontal planes under and in contact with the anged treads of the usual railway track rails to restrict upward movement of the wheels of the car, or movement away from the track rails particularly when the car is traveling around curves, at high speed.
- Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceptionally simple in construction and may be readily and easily mounted on a truck frame, eliminating the necessity of making extensive alterations in the truck frame, to mount the attachment.

2 Claims. (Cl. 11M-246) This invention relates to a railway safety device or anti-derailing means carried by a car moving over the rails of a track, which will hold the car against being derailed when a car is moving particularly at high speed.
An important object of the invention is to provide arms constructed preferably of steel, the arms being attached to the running gear of the trucks of a railway car, the arms providing supports for guard wheels that operate in horizontal planes under and in contact with the anged treads of the usual railway track rails to restrict upward movement of the wheels of the car, or movement away from the track rails particularly when the car is traveling around curves, at high speed.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is exceptionally simple in construction and may be readily and easily mounted on a truck frame, eliminating the necessity of making extensive alterations in the truck frame, to mount the attachment.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described and the novel features thereof dened in the appended claims.
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a railway rail showing the wheels of the truck of a car mounted thereon, the anti-derailing attachment forming the essence of the present invention, being shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1, on line 24-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the adjacent ends of railway rails, which are welded together at 6, the conventional splice bars having been removed.
The reference character 7 indicates a truck forming a part of lthe running gear of a railway car. The reference character 8 indicates wheels of a railway car which move over the rails 5, in the usual manner.
The device forming the subject matter of the present invention, comprises a bowed arm 9 constructed of spring steel, and secured intermediate its ends by means of bolts 10 that extend through the arm 9 and are secured to a channel bar 11 forming a part of the truck.

The curved arm 9 is of a length so that the ends 12 thereof and which extend laterally, will be disposed at points adjacent to the tread of the rails of the track over which the truck is moving.
These laterally extended ends 12 provide supports for the cone shaped rollers 13 which have enlarged lower ends 14 that tit under the tread of the rails with which they engage, the rollers 13 being urged into close contact with the lower surfaces of the treads of the rails, due to the spring construction of the curved arm 9.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, the wheels 8 of the running gear of the car will be held in to close contact with the treads of the rails, by the action of the arm 9, the arm 9 permitting slight vertical movement of the rollers 13, compensating for vertical movement of the wheels 8 in passing over irregularities on the track.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed:
l. The combination with the wheels of a railway cat truck movable over the rails of a .railway track, of a safety device comprising a transversely disposed bowed spring arm, means securing said arm intermediate its ends to said railway car truck, the ends of said bowed spring arm extending downwardly and laterally, the laterally extended ends underlying the treads of the rails of the track, rollers having anged lower ends and vertical axes fitted under the treads of the rails, secured to the upper surfaces of the ends of said bowed spring arm holding the wheels of said railway car truck to the rails 4of the track, the anges of said rollers engaging the lower sides of the rail heads.
2. The combination with the wheels of a railway car truck movable over the rails of a railway track, of a safety device comprising a transversely disposed bowed spring arm, means securing said arm intermediate its ends to said railway car truck, the ends of said bowed spring arm extending laterally under the treads of the railway track, rollers mounted on the laterally extended ends, having vertical axes, and annular flanges projecting from the bases of said rollers, adapted to engage the under side of said track treads for holding the wheels of said railway car on the track.
