Abstract

251,030. Rendell, E. D. Jan. 27, 1925. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a simple spur train C, D, F adapted to yield a solid high-speed drive and two reductions. The planet gears D are carried by a driven sleeve B which rotates on a non-rotary shaft A spigoted into the aligned driving-shaft P. Operation is effected by two sliding systems, one of which comprises a clutch member I sliding on the squared end of the shaft P and having a circular groove engaged by radial pins K which register with holes in a non-rotary dog stopping-member M. The other system comprises a simple dog member T sliding on a squared part S of the shaft A The configuration shown yields the low speed, the sun gear C being driven by inner dogs J upon the member I, and the internallytoothed ring F being held fast by the dog member T. For the solid drive, the member T is disengaged and the gear C and ring F are driven simultaneously by the two sets of dogs J. The pins K are adapted to be traversed by telescoping links L connecting to a control shaft Z, which also carries a cam plate X, which, through a linkage W, V. R., operates also the member T. In a modification, the dual control is effected by an annular cam encircling the gearing. In a further modification, driving and driven members are arranged on the same side of the gearing by making the non-rotary shaft corresponding to A, hollow, and passing the driving-shaft therethrough. Specifications 12873/09 and 7991/13 are referred to.
