Films and papers.-A design is applied to the surface either of the support, or of the sensitive emulsion, of a photographic paper, film, &c. in a medium which will reduce the sensitiveness of the emulsion or prevent the subsequent development of any latent image therein. The method may, for example, he employed to print a system of squares upon material to be used in the reproduction of maps or drawings, in order that dimensions may be read off therefrom even though the prints become distorted by development &c. The medium may be an organic acid such as citric acid, or a desensitizing dye such as phenosafranine, or a mixture of these in an aqueous solution thickened as with gum arabic or starch; or it may take the form of an oil-bearing ink, colour, or paste containing, for example, the base of the dye-stuff chrysoidine.
