Abstract
250,737. Eden, J. L. March 23, 1925. Range-finders.-Rangefinding apparatus consists of two arms hinged together and capable of being separated by a micrometer screw, one of the arms carrying a fixed and an adjustable prism. The adjustable prism and the micrometer screw are operated so as to convert the apparatus into a reduced facsimile of the triangle formed by the object ranged upon and the two prisms, the micrometer screw measuring one side of the triangle so formed. An arm 1 carries two prisms 4, 6, the prism 6 being half the height of the prism 4 and adjustable about a pivot 7 by a screw 8. Pivoted to the arm 1 is a second arm 2, which is moved against the action of a spring 21 by micrometer screw 15. On this arm 2 is mounted a mirror 10, a hair-line 17, and a lens 16. The distant object is sighted along the arm 1 through both prisms 4, 6 the line of sight passing through the mirror 10 from the prism 6 and through the aperture made by turning the shutter 12 into a. position at right angles to the arm 2, and the line of sight in the upper part passing through the prism 4 past hair lines 5 to the object. The screw 8 is adjusted until coincidence is effected and then the shutter 12 is closed and the screw 15 adjusted until the line 17 is sighted by means of the mirror 10 in conjunction with lines 5. The reading on the micrometer screw 15 gives the range.
