Description

Warning Device for a Vehicle The invention relates to a warning device for a vehicle.
Based on accident surveys and statistics it can be found that cyclists often get injured by colliding with side doors of vehicles when passengers of the vehicles open the side doors incautiously, i.e. without paying attention to cyclists moving towards the vehicles. In DE 10 2011 076 340 Al a method for warning outside traffic participants in an environment of a motor vehicle about an forthcoming opening of a door of the motor vehicle can be found. In said method the environment of the motor vehicle is captured.
Moreover, captured data are analysed in order to localize moving objects in the environment of the motor vehicle. Furthermore, it is captured if a door of the motor vehicle is about to be opened from the inside of the motor vehicle. In a further step of said method a warning signal is output to the environment of the motor vehicle if a moving object is captured in the environment of the motor vehicle and the door is about to be opened from the inside of the vehicle.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a warning device for vehicle, wherein by means of the warning device the risk of a collision of a cyclist with a side door of the vehicle can be kept particularly low.
This object is solved by a warning device having the features of patent claim 1.
Advantageous embodiments with expedient and non-trivial developments of the invention are indicated in the other patent claims.
The invention relates to a warning device for a vehicle, the warning device comprising at least one first proximity sensor for capturing at least one object moving towards the vehicle. For example, the first proximity sensor is capable of providing at least one first signal characterising the object moving towards the vehicle. The object can be, for example, a cyclist or another outside traffic participant moving towards the vehicle.
The warning device also comprises at least one second proximity sensor for detecting a passenger's hand approaching an inner door handle of a side door of the vehicle. In other words, the second proximity sensor serves for detecting if a hand of a passenger of the vehicle is approaching the inner door handle and/or touching the inner door handle. The second proximity sensor can be capable of providing at least one second signal characterising the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle.
Moreover, the warning device comprises at least one warning element for outputting at least one warning signal to the passenger of the vehicle if an object moving towards the vehicle is captured by the first proximity sensor and the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle is detected by the second proximity sensor. In other words, the warning element is designed to output the warning signal in dependency on said signals provided by the proximity sensors. If an object outside the vehicle is captured by means of the first proximity sensor, the object moving towards the vehicle, and if the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle is detected by means of the second proximity sensor, the warning signal is output to the passenger moving his or her hand towards the inner door handle, thus intending to open the side door. Thereby, the passenger is warned about the object moving towards the vehicle so that the passenger can refrain from opening the side door, stop opening the side door, or slow down the movement of the side door while opening it.
If the second proximity sensor detects the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle or touching the door handle the probability that the side door will be opened by the passenger can be assessed as being high so that the risk of a collision between the side door and an object moving towards the vehicle can be assessed as being high, too.
Hence, the passenger can be warned by means of the warning signal so that a collision of the object with the side door can be avoided.
The warning element serves for warning the passenger being inside the vehicle. Hence, the warning element is arranged and/or designed in such a way that the warning signal output by the warning element can be noticed by the passenger being in the interior of the vehicle.
Since the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle is considered as a condition for outputting the warning signal, unnecessary and annoying outputting of the warning signal, for example, while stopping the vehicle can be avoided.
The warning device according to the invention not only serves for protecting objects and especially cyclists from colliding with a side door of the vehicle, but also for protecting passengers inside the vehicle since the risk of a collision between objects moving towards the vehicle and passengers inside the vehicle or getting out of the vehicle can be kept particularly low, too.
Further advantages, features and details of the invention derive from the following description of a preferred embodiment as well as from the drawing. The features and feature combinations previously mentioned in the description as well as the features and feature combinations mentioned in the following description of the figures and/or shown alone in the figures alone can be employed not only in the respective indicated combination but also in any other combination or taken alone without leaving the scope of the invention.
The drawing shows in: Fig. 1 a schematic and perspective view of an exterior rear-view mirror of a vehicle, wherein a first proximity sensor of a warning device for the vehicle is arranged on the exterior rear-view mirror, the first proximity sensor serving for capturing at least one object moving towards the vehicle; Fig. 2 part of a schematic and perspective view of a side door of the vehicle, wherein a second proximity sensor of the warning device is arranged on an inner door handle of the side door, the second proximity sensor serving for detecting a passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle of the side door, and wherein the warning device also comprises at least one warning element for outputting at least one warning signal to the passenger of the vehicle independency on signals provided by the proximity sensors; Fig. 3 a schematic top view of the vehicle; and Fig. 4 part of a schematic view of the interior of the vehicle.
In the figures the same elements or element having the same functions are equipped with the same reference.
Fig. 1 shows an exterior rear-view mirror 10 of a vehicle in the form of a passenger vehicle designated as a whole by reference 12. In the present case, the exterior rear-view mirror lOis attached to a side door 14 of the passenger vehicle 12, the side door 14 being arranged on the driver's side.
The passenger vehicle 12 also comprises a warning device comprising a first proximity sensor 16 being arranged on the exterior rear-view mirror 10. The warning device can also comprise a control unit not shown in Fig. 1, wherein the proximity sensor 16 is connected to the control unit. This connection is illustrated in Fig. 1 by a line 18. The first proximity sensor 16 serves for capturing at least one object moving towards the vehicle.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, said object can be, for example, a cyclist 20 moving towards the passenger vehicle 12 from the back of the passenger vehicle 12 on its driver's side.
The first proximity sensor 16 is capable of providing at least one first signal characterising the movement of the object towards the passenger vehicle 12. For example, the first signal comprises at least one distance value characterising the distance between the passenger vehicle 12 and the cyclist 20. For example, the distance value can characterize the distance between the cyclist 20 and the side door 14. lfthefirst proximity sensor 16 detects that the distance value decreases over a predeterminable period of time, it can be concluded that the cyclist 20 is approaching the passenger vehicle 12.
Fig. 2 shows the interior of the passenger vehicle 12 partially. In Fig. 2 a steering wheel 22, a dash board 24 and an interior panelling 26 of the side door 14 can be seen. The side door 14 comprises an inner door handle 28 by means of which a door lock locking the side door 14 in its closed position can be unlocked so that the door can be moved from its closed position into at least one open position, the closed position being shown in Fig. 1, 2 and 4. The open position of the side door 14 can be seen from Fig. 3.
In order to move the side door 14 from its closed position into its open position, a passenger, for example, the driver of the passenger vehicle 12 moves his or her hand towards the inner door handle 28 and grasps the inner door handle 28 thereby touching it.
The warning device comprises a second proximity sensor 30 arranged on the inner door handle 28. For example, the second proximity sensor 30 can be arranged inside the inner door handle 28. The second proximity sensor 30 serves for detecting a passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle 28. In other words, it can be detected by means of the second proximity sensor 30 if the driver moves his hand towards the door handle 28 and/or touches it. For example, the hand moving towards the inner door handle 28 can be detected in such a way that a distance between the hand and the inner door handle 28 can be measured by means of the second proximity sensor 30. If a distance value characterising the distance between the hand and the inner door handle 28 reaches or drops below a predeterminable threshold value, the passenger's hand moving towards the inner door handle 28 can be detected. The predeterminable threshold value can be zero, so that the passenger's hand is detected when the hand touches the inner door handle 28.
If the passenger's hand approaching the inner door handle 28 is detected, it can be assumed that the passenger, for example, the driver is about to open the side door 14. In other words, by detecting the hand approaching the inner door handle 28, a forthcoming opening of the side door 14 being closed initially can be assumed. The second proximity sensor 30 is capable of providing at least one second signal characterising the hand approaching the inner door handle 28. The second proximity sensor 30 can be connected to the control unit, too, so that both the first signal provided by the first proximity sensor 18 and the second signal provided by the second proximity sensor 30 can be transmitted to and received by the control unit.
Moreover, the warning device comprises at least one warning element 32. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-4, the warning element 32 is arranged on the inner door handle 28. For example, the warning element 32 can be arranged inside the inner door handle 28, so that passengers cannot see the warning element 32.
Instead of being arranged on the inner door handle 28 the warning element 32 can be arranged in a different position in the interior of the passenger vehicle 14. Moreover, the warning device can comprise a plurality of warning element being arranged in different positions in the interior. Advantageously, the warning element 32 is arranged in the interior of the vehicle with regard to a closed position of the side door 14.
The warning element 32 serves for outputting at least one warning signal to the passenger, for example, the driver in dependency on the signals provided by the proximity sensors 16, 30. The warning element 32 can be connected to the control unit.
If the first proximity sensor 16 detects that the cyclist 20 moves towards the passenger vehicle 12, and if the second proximity sensor 30 detects that that the hand is moved towards the inner door handle 28 so that the driver can open the side door 40, the control unit sends at least one actuation signal to the warning element 32, the actuation signal effecting the output of the warning signal. The warning signal serves for warning the driver not to open the side door 14 or not to move the side door 14 further so that a collision of the cyclist 20 with the side door 14 can be avoided. This means that the warning device can call the driver's attention to the fact that the cyclist 20 is moving towards the passenger vehicle 12.
The warning element 32 can comprise at least one lighting element, for example, a LED (light emitting diode) so that the warning element 32 is, for example, designed to output the warning signal in the form of at least on blinking light. For example, the warning element 32 can comprise at least one speaker element so that the warning element is, for example, designed to output the warning signal in the form of an acoustic signal. Said acoustic signal can be a buzzing alarm. The warning element 32 can comprise at least one actuator so that the warning element 32 is designed to output the warning signal in the form of vibrations of the inner door handle 28. This means that vibrations of the inner door handle 28 are effected by means of the warning element 32 in order to call the driver's attention to the fact that the cyclist 20 is approaching the passenger vehicle 12.
Notifying the warning signal, the driver inside the passenger vehicle 12 can realize that the cyclist 20 is approaching the side door 14 or very near to the side door l4so that the driver should not open the side door 14 in order to avoid the collision of the cyclist 20 with the side door 14.
By considering the hand approaching the inner door handle 28, unnecessary and annoying outputs of the warning signal can be avoided since the warning signal is output only if the hand approaching the inner door handle 28 is detected.
The activity of the proximity sensor 16 and/or 30 respectively can be actuated by switch.
Thus, it is possible to deactivate the warning device so that unnecessary and annoying outputs of the warning signal as well as irritations of driver can be avoided. The switch can be, for example, mounted on the dash board 24 or the side door 14. In comparison with a visual camera the use of proximity sensors leads to the reduction of implementations costs of the warning device. However, cameras can be used as proximity sensors.
From Fig. 4, a side door 34 of the passenger vehicle 12 can be seen. The side door 34 is arranged on the front passenger's side of the passenger vehicle 12. The features, advantages, embodiments and functions of the warning device with reference to the side door 14 apply also to the side door 34. This means that the front passenger moving his hand towards the door handle 28 of the side door 34 and intending to open the side door 34 can also be warned not to open the side door 34 if the proximity sensor 16 of the side door 34 detects that an object, for example, a cyclist is moving towards the passenger vehicle 12 on the front passengers side.
