Abstract

250,329. Johnson, E. W, and Defries, C. Jan. 9, 1925. Fluid-friction vibration-dampers.-In apparatus of the type in which a main working chamber enclosing one or more vanes and one or more abutments is automatically kept charged with working fluid from a recuperator chamber, the two chambers are nested, preferably eccentrically, the one in the other. Two open ended tubes 19, 20 are clamped between an end plate 11 bolted for instance to the frame of a vehicle and an end plate 13, the bolts 23 passing through the outer annular space which forms the recuperator chamber. The faces of the end plates are grooved and the grooves are packed or the engaging parts are otherwise shaped as shown for instance in Fig. 9 to make a tight joint. The operating arm 39 is keyed to a hub part 15 having a groove adapted to receive a vane 24, the working cham. ber being divided into two parts by the vane 24 and the fixed abutment 28, the latter having a small passage 31 with a valve 70 which may be adjusted from the outside. When the apparatus is intended to give a one way action, the vane 24 is provided with a one way valve 27 connecting the two parts of the working chamber. The vane may be removed and reversed to reverse the action of the apparatus. At the upper part of the cylinders 20 valves 48 are provided having double conical seats and so constructed as to allow escape of air from the working chamber to the recuperator chamber and to prevent escape of the working fluid. Valves 49 are also provided at the lower part of the cylinder 20 so as to allow the working fluid to flow from the recuperator chamber to the working chamber but prevent its return.
