Abstract

249,962. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Trencham, H. Jan. 29, 1925. High-potential switches for overhead power lines have a pivoted switch arm detachably secured to one of a pair of insulated terminals and formed as a fusable element and its carrier. The power lines 14 are brought to fixed contacts 13 mounted on a platform 12 carried by the pole 11. The movable contact members 25 are secured at the ends of fuse carriers 21 held within terminal portions 15 carried by insulators 16. These insulators are carried by a cross-bar 17 pivoted at 18 to fixed brackets 19, the bar being rotated by an operating lever 36 the end of which remote from the downwardly-projecting handle is linked to the bar 18. The fixed and movable switch terminals 13, 15 are provided with arcing horns 27 the fuse being arranged on the upper side of the carrier 21 between the horns so that quenching of the arc on blowing of the fuse is thereby assisted. The platform 12 is covered with an insulating sheet 33 so that access to the fuse holders may only be obtained through apertures 34 when covers 35 for these apertures are moved aside by the opening of the switch. The fuse carriers are provided with a handle 26 and are fitted within the terminals 15 by a bayonet-slot device. Connections are taken from the terminals 15 to a transformer 29 by leads 31, 32 secured to the contacts 15 at points on the pivotal axis the portions 32 of these connections being bifurcated to allow the movable switch members to pass between them.
