Inductances; wireless tuning-apparatus, adjustment devices for. - A variable inductance and coupling coil for radio purposes comprises a solenoid tapped to a selecting switch and a movable coil mounted within or adjacent to one end of the solenoid so as to pivot about an axis which forms a diameter of the solenoid. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the solenoid 10 is wound on an ebonite or other insulating former 11 supported by a.n end disc 12 on which is mounted the selector tapping switch 16. The movable coupling coil 17. which is preferably wound on a cylindrical former, is pivoted on a spindle 19 in brackets 20 on the former 11. The coil is adjusted by bevel gearing and a shaft 23 journaled in the bracket 20 and in a bearing 24 carried by the support 12. The former 18 is preferably such that when coaxial with the main coil 10, as shown, its end face is flush with the end of the former 11. The support 12 carries spacing pillars 29, threaded for screws 31 whereby the whole device, together with an index plate 32, may be mounted on a pawl 30. An insulating ring 25 at the opposite end of the former 11 carries terminals 27, to which the coupling coil is connected, as shown in Fig. 4, and terminals 26 for the main solenoid and tapping switch arm 16. This arm is connected to the last two studs 15 of the switch and these are coupled at 28. The contact width of the switch arm is such as to bridge two adjacent studs and shortcircuit the intervening section of the solenoid in order to reduce the " dead-end " effect.
