Abstract

217,267. Richardson, R. P., Cole, T. N., and Ward, G. L. Feb. 6,1923. Regulating Switches.-The contact-plates of a regulating switch are mounted on the base on which an inductance is wound and the controlling stem is mounted centrally in the base; the device is secured to the cover-plate of a wireless receiving set by means requiring only one perforation in the cover-plate. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the inductance comprises a coil 1 wound on an insulating former 2 closed at one end by a plate 3 and at the other by a plate 4 carrying contact studs 5 connected to tappings on the coil. A switch arm 10 mounted on a. central stem 7 which passes through a threaded bush 11 screwed into the plate 3. The inductance may be mounted on the cover-plate of a wireless receiving set by passing the bush 11 through a perforation therein and securing it together with a graduated disc 12 by a nut. A knob 8 and pointer 9 are mounted on the spindle 7. In a modification the 'former 2 is grooved to receive the wire, and the bush 11 and its nut are replaced by a flanged bush which is inserted through the hole in the cover-plate and screwed to the former. A variable inductance of the above kind may be provided with means for varying its coupling with a second inductance of fixed value mounted on the same base, as shown in Fig. 4. A multi-layer coil 24 has tappings connected to contact studs 25 on an insulating plate 26, the studs being engaged by a switch arm 27 mounted on a hollow stem 28. The second inductance 35 is mounted on a former 34 having a threaded central aperture engaging a threaded rod 33 secured to a stem 31 passing through the stem 28. The former 34 is prevented from rotating by guides 36. The unit is secured to the cover-plate of the set by a ranged and threaded bush 21. A knob 29 and pointer 30 are secured to the stem 28, and a knob 32 to the stem 31. In a modification, a tapped cylindrical inductance is caused to slide over a cylindrical inductance of fixed value by axial motion of the switch arm stem. Pins on the sliding inductance engage holes in the fixed one to prevent rotation.
