Abstract

Plates, secured pipes and tubes to.-In a radiator for an internal combustion engine the water-tight connections between the tubes and the upper and lower compartments are as shown in Fig. 2. Stepped holes facing inwards are provided in the upper and lower plates 5 and the tubes 8 are provided with one integral and one detachable flange 10. Locking rings 12 are screwed into the larger parts of the holes in the plates and packing washers 13 placed on one or both sides of the flanges 10. In a modification the tubes are screw-threaded at both ends and the flanges 10 are carried. on collars screwed thereon, the stepped holes in the plates 5 being as shown in the lower part of Fig. 2, with the portions of smallest diameter threaded to engage the external surfaces of the collars. Fig. 3 shows an expansion-joint for use in radiators having pipe-joints as described. The framework bolts 16 are elongated and pass through enlarged holes 17 in the flanges 18 of the side-plates. Springs 19 are provided between flanges 18 and the securing nuts 20. According to the Provisional Specification the flanges can be integral with the pipes at both ends and the shouldered holes in the plates face outwards.
