Producers.-In a process for producing combustible gas and coke from bituminous fuel of the kind described in the parent Specification in which the coke formed is maintained incandescent by continuously withdrawing it at such a rate that up-steaming only can be maintained, a part of the mixed gas from the top of the shaft is, after being scrubbed, returned to the bottom of the generator to replace the whole or part of the steam used during the cold blowing period. The mixed gas may be introduced at intermittent periods alternating with the steam or one cold blowing period may be divided into a steaming and gassing period.
