Abstract

248,249. Lathauwer, A. de. July 16, 1925. Arresting-grip or friction apparatus on permanent way; scotch-blocks; skid. -Apparatus for braking railway vehicles, particularly on shunting tracks, comprises a brake block on each rail connected to a carriage which when the vehicle is moved in the reverse direction after braking is engaged by the wheel and is deflected from the rail by a guide rail when the brake block has been returned to its initial position. In addition, when it is desired to stop the vehicles within a given distance, braking bars are arranged on the track for engagement with the sides of the wheels. The bars are moved into the braking position and locked therein by the brake blocks and are unlocked and returned to the normal position by the wheels when the vehicle is withdrawn. The brake blocks 1 comprise upper and lower transverse U-ehaped members connected by side plates 5 which embrace the head of the rail 3 to form guides for the shoe. The shoes are connected by a transverse bar 2 and are connected by springy plates 9 to carriages 10 each comprising a pair of rollers 13 engaging the rail and a third roller 14 frictionally engaging the rollers 13. The side plate 12 of 'each carriage extends into a slot 17 between the rail 3 or a wedge piece 18 and a guide rail 15. Normally, the carriages 10 are disposed in the divergent parts of the slots 17 so that the wheels of a vehicle to be braked moving in the direction of the arrow a engage the brake blocks 1 and move these and the carriages 10 into such a position as that shown in Fig. 1. When the vehicle is moved in tEe reverse direction, the wheels by engaging the rollers 14 of the carriages move these and the blocks 1 until the carriages are deflected by the wedge pieces 18 and the blocks are in the original position. The additional braking apparatus comprises braking bars 20 adapted to be moved laterally against the sides of the wheels and to force them against fixed bars 43 by means of wedges 22 engaging rods 21 secured to the bars 20. The wedges 22 are attached to a sliding rod 23 connected by a frame 39 to a pair of sliding bars 29 to each of which is pivoted a dog 33 which when engaged by an abutment on the brake block 1 in the one direction abuts against a stop 36 on the bars 29 so that these and the rod 23 are moved to force the bars 20 against the wheels, slot devices 31 causing the bars 29 to move inwardly so that the wheels may clear the dogs. The bars 20 are locked in the braking position by a latch 33 engaging an extension of the rod 23 and actuated by a bell-crank 50, rod 48 and lever 44 connected to the frame 39. To effect the unlocking and disengagement of the bars 20, after the braking operation a slide 64 mounted on one of the fixed brake bars 43 carries by means of levers 68, 69 dogs 67 which when engaged by the wheels in the direction for withdrawing the vehicles abut stops 73 on the slide 64 and causes it by means of a lever 60 pivoted on a fixed member 74, Fig. 10, to actuate the rod 48 thereby first withdrawing the latch 53 and then the wedges 22. The slide 64 has a pin-and-slot connection 65 with the bar 43 so that the wheels may push the dogs aside after actuating the rod 48.
