Abstract
248,016. Invernairn (W. Beardmore), Lord, and Chorlton, A. E. L. Sept. 24, 1924. Regulating delivery by closing suction and delivery valves.-Fuel is delivered by a pump plunger A reciprocated directly from the engine work shaft E to one of two fuel injectors on each alternate forcing stroke, through a distributing valve C reciprocated by an eccentric G<2> driven at half crank shaft speed by gearing E<2>, E<3>. The constricted portions F<4>, F<5> of the valve C alternately place the delivery pipe D<3> of the pump in communication with one or other of the pipes H<1>, H<2> leading to the fuel injectors. Fuel is delivered to the pump from a tank N by a gear pump N1 which is driven from the crankshaft by gearing E<2>, E<3>, E<4>, E<5> and which supplies an air bottle N<3>, both the pump N<1> and the air bottle being common to a series of three pumps D, each supplying two cylinders. The fuel passes from the air bottle N<3> to the pump chamber D<1> through a suction valve B which returns fuel back to the air bottle N<3> at the beginning and end of the forcing stroke of the plunger A. The valve B is reciprocated from the plunger A through an eccentrically mounted lever K, and comprises two constricted portions J<3>, J<4> separated by a boss K<3>, and in communication with one another through a central passage J<5>. The constricted portion J<4> is always in communication with the air bottle N<3> and serves to connect the pump chamber D<1> with the source of fuel supply at the lower end of the stroke of the plunger A, wherein the constricted portion J<3> connects the chamber D<1> with the air bottle N<3> at the upper end of the plunger stroke. Injection takes place while the central boss K<3> of the valve B is passing the port J<2> leading to the pump chamber D<1>. In order to vary the quantity of fuel injected the boss K<3> is made of varying axial length, and the valve B is adapted to be rotated by means of a handle K<4>. The timing of the injection period relatively to the position of the engine piston may be varied by means of the eccentric K<1>. The fuel injector L<1> comprises a series of converging orifices M<1>, controlled by a fluid-actuated valve M<3>.
