The opening or closing of the valve controlling the supply of water for cooling the core of vertical stereotype-casting boxes is automatically effected by the action of closing or opening the casting-box and moving the trimming-mechanism out of or into operation. Water is supplied to the interior of the core 10 through a pipe 9 in which is a. valve 2 connected by a link 8 to the lower arm 3a of a lever 3. The lever 3, which is operated by a cam 4 and a hand lever 1 fixed on a shaft 5, is connected by a link 7 with the mechanism for opening the box and bringing the cutters for trimming the plate into operation. The device is so arranged that the movement of the lever 3 for opening or closing the box respectively closes or opens the valve 2.
