In metal-clad switchgear of the horizontal draw out type for use with duplicated bus-bars, the busbar selecting switch or equivalent plug arrangement is permanently mounted within the movable part of the casing and is operated wholly from outside the casing. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the inner ends of the isolating plugs B, B' on the sliding carriage are provided with contacts B<2>, B<3> with one or both of which a switch member D may be brought into engagement by external hand-operated worm gear acting through links H<1>, H, F and E. An earthing contact J may be provided within the casing with which the contact-member D may be brought into engagement. The selector switch is interlocked with the oil switch or the sliding carriage by means, for example, of a lock K<1> serving to prevent movement of the linkwork operating mechanism and controlled by an electromagnet K the energizing circuit of which includes the auxiliary plugs L on the sliding carriage. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, two contact arms D', D' are employed and are operated in the desired sequence and to the necessary relative extent to produce the selective bus-bar and earth connections desired. The contact arms are each connected through separate links D<4> to separate slotted members D', D' which are driven by pins R' on the externally-rotated shaft. Two earthing contacts J<1>, J<2> are provided in this form. Instead of contact-members of the knife-blade type, centrally carried rectilinearly-sliding or rotating contact-members may be used. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, contact-members D<19>, D<20> of plug form sliding in sockets in a member D<24> connected with one pole of the oil switch are moved alternately into engagement with one or other of the bus-bar contacts B, B<1> by means of a pinion D<23> externally operated and engaging racks D<21>, D<22>.
