453,857. Oil - break switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., Hebburn-on- Tyne, and ALLAN, A., Craigside, Ashleigh Grove, Tynemouth. March 19, 1935, No. 8554. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit-breaker for use in connecting a reactance between bus-bar sections or other circuits comprises four fixed contacts G ... G3 immersed in insulating liquid in a tank E, two simultaneously operated movable contactmembers K, K<2> each co-operating with a pair of fixed contacts, and a third independently operated movable contact-member K<1> cooperating with one fixed contact of one pair and one fixed contact of the other pair. In the arrangement shown, for controlling the connections of reactances N ... N<2> to three-phase bus-bar sections B ... B<2> and B<3> . . . B<5>, separate breakers are employed for each phase, the breakers being arranged in a row and provided with two sets of operating gear C, D located at opposite ends of the row. The contacts G<1>, G<2> of each breaker are each provided with a pair of arc control devices H of the baffle type, and are connected to the bus-bars, while the contacts G, G<3> are provided with single arc control devices and connected to the reactances. The bridging members K, K2 are mounted on rods L<1> which are operated together, through rack-and-pinion gearing, from a shaft C<1> connected to the operating mechanism C. The bridging member K is mounted on a rod L<2> operated by a shaft D<1> connected to the operating gear D. By operating the gear C the two bus-bar sections may be connected through the reactances, and the reactances may then be short-circuited by operating the gear D. If the bridging members K, K<2> are then moved to the open position, the reactances can be isolated, while leaving the bus-bar sections connected together through the bridging members K<1>. When the invention is applied to enclosed metal-clad switchgear, the circuitbreakers may be of the withdrawable type or the connections to the external circuits may be made through longitudinally movable insulated conductors, which can be withdrawn downwardly into the tank for isolating purposes, as described in Specification 398,891.
