Abstract
244,894. Taylor, G. A. Nov. 24, 1924. Four-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear; crank chambers; cylinders; cooling.-The cylinders of an engine are arranged with their axes parellel to the main shaft 18, which is driven through bevel gear 16, 29 from the crank shafts 13 of each cylinder. The small wheels 16 may be formed on the crank discs 12 or be driven therefrom by dogs 17. The large wheel may be formed on the flywheel 22 or on a separate crown wheel bolted to the main shaft. The gear wheels may be inside or outside the crank case S; when arranged as shown studs 41 are placed under the crown wheel to support it. When the gear wheels are outside the crank case a protective casing prevents dirt entering the teeth. The main shaft is supported by two bearings 20, 21. When the cylinders are air-cooled the main shaft is extended to the top of the engine and carries a horizontal flanged disc with two or more blades for forcing air over the cylinders.
