Abstract
244,629. Orpen, H., and Marcovitch & Co., Ltd. April 7, 1925. Soldering filled receptacles. - The orifices in metal boxes such as cigarette tins are soldered in a vacuum chamber having a removable counter-balanced cover containing a stuffing box and gland to hold an electric soldering iron. The vacuum chamber consists of a glass cylinder 11 pressed against a rubber ring 12 on the base 1 by securing thereto a recessed cover 7 which is slidable by a key and keyway 10, 9 on a column 3 and is counterbalanced by a weight 6. The cover has rubber-covered springs 16 to engage the cylinder held in a recess 7' therein, and is provided with a stuffing box 17 containing a spherical joint comprising a ball 20 through which an electric soldering iron 19 is passed. The joint is provided with packing 21 formed round the stem of the iron by a nut 22. The iron is pressed into contact with the tin 14 against the action of a spring 25. The cover carries a vacuum gauge and may be raised together with the cylinder to insert or remove the work by a handle screwed into the web 7<11>. The tin fits between springs 15 on a wooden floor 13 which fits over the part 1<1> of the base and forms a support for the cylinder. The chamber is connected through the base 1 to the vacuum pump by way of a three-way valve, which in one position connects the chamber to the air and in the other position to the pump.
