Abstract

Davits. - Slueing davits 1 are mounted on a horizontally pivoted platform so that, in the event of the ship having a list, the davits and boat may be worked outboard under the action of gravity. The davit sockets 3 are hinged at 4 to a frame comprising bars 5 which are mounted on horizontal pivots 11 and carry stools 6 which support T-bars 7 on which the chocks 8, 9 are mounted, the whole of their arrangements for supporting the boat 2 protruding through slots in the boat deck. An initial outboard luff of the davits is secured, when the bars 5 are lowered, by providing links 13 hinged at 14 and connected at their upper ends to the davit socket. The gear for controlling the outboard motion of the davits comprises a brake in the form of a hydraulic cylinder 26, Fig. 3, the piston of which is secured to falls 18, 19 which pass over fairleads 20 .. 23, and terminate at the davit whilst the piston is further provided with a backward extension 35 ino which a second set of falls 27, 28 are secured and terminate at the second davit after passing over fairleads 29 .. 34. The speed of the piston, and hence the lowering of the boat, is controlled by a cock 27 in a bye-pass 36, connecting opposite ends of the cylinder.
