Abstract
243,280. Roeckner, M. July 15, 1925. Rolling annular bodies; skew-rolling.- Seamless pipes are rolled from a hollow block 1 by pairs of internal and external rolls 2 and 3 which form a nick in the metal, Fig. 1, which is gradually rolled towards one end by succeeding pairs of flatter edged rollers, e.g. 6 and 7 to form the pipe. The mill, Fig. 9, has four pairs of rolls 2<b>, 3<b>, 6<b>, 7<b> &c., the outer roll 3<b> being mounted in supports 10 adjusted by screw gear 12 to vary the pass and driven by bevel gear 15. The inner rolls 2b, 6b are mounted in supports 17 radially slidable in a head 18 of a stationary cylinder 29. A wedge piece 19 moved by screw gear 20 bears on the ends of the supports 17 to adjust the inner rolls. Each pair of rolls 2<b>, 3<b> &c. is arranged in a helical line behind the other pair. The axes of the rolls may be inclined to the axis of the hollow block to advance the latter bv a. screwing action. Separate guide rollers may be provided to keep the hollow block vertical. The nick may be produced at either the inner or outer circumference or both. Mandrel supports.-The mill may be horizontally arranged, and in this case the internal rolls are mounted on an arm supported on trunnions and provided with a counterweight.
